Enjoying Golf at Strawberry Hill
We have a number of events throughout the year for all members, adults and juniors, from the arguably mad "night golf "event in early March, the regular friendly roll-ups on Friday evenings throughout the summer, and our Powerplay events, to the slightly more serious club competition for all, the JH Taylor Cup in August. There are also a number of mixed men and women events in the summer months, and the annual knock-out mixed foursomes challenge, a hotly contested competition where "sorry partner" appears to be the most often spoken phrase.
There are two categories of membership for men at Strawberry Hill; full membership, which gives access to the course at all times and access to all men's club competitions, and 5-Day Plus membership, which limits golf at weekends to the afternoons, and to fewer of the club's competitions. Both categories are equally popular we find that choice of which to join is largely driven by cost, 5-Day is slightly cheaper, or by how much weekend golf you feel you will want to play. And, of course, you can always move from one to the other if circumstances change.
This category, like all the others, encompasses a wide range of abilities, from beginners at the upper end to the single handicappers. All competitions are open to all full members and there is a busy calendar of events, most of them on Saturday or Sunday mornings throughout the year. We've recently responded to the request from members for more stableford competitions by introducing two of these arguably less exacting events each month, one midweek and one weekend.
One aspect of golf which our full members appear to particularly enjoy is the club convention of stopping after the first 9 holes on Sunday mornings for breakfast, rather than playing all 18 before taking on any sustenance. This half way break makes for a much more leisurely and friendly weekend game, with conversation among the 3 groups breakfasting at any one time adding to the general camaraderie and good natured banter of any time spent on the golf course.
There is active seniors section within the club, playing a number of competitions throughout the year. Over the last couple of years they have entered several national seniors competitions.
We run a number of competitions at weekends where partners and 4's are drawn in order that members get games with as many others as possible. Our whole approach at Strawberry Hill is to ensure everyone is involved as much as possible and that it is always easy to get a game. There is no system for booking tee times except for competitions and on Sunday mornings and golfers are encouraged to just turn up and play with others they meet at the course.
